Pap Smear & HPV Screening

Overview of Cervical Cancer- Cervical cancer is cancer in the cervix, which is the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb).  In most cases, cervical cancer is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).

Regular screening from 21 to 65 years old can reduce cervical cancer cases and deaths.  Screening works by finding a viral infection and any abnormal changes of the cells in the cervix early.  Your health care team can treat any abnormal cells before they turn into cancer.Cervical cancer screening helps detect changes early.

We make the process clear, calm, and respectful.

HPV test looks for a common viral infection of the cervix.

Pap test (sometimes called a Pap smear) looks for changes in the cells of the cervix.

At a screening visit, a small brush the size of a Q-tip is used to collect a sample from the cervix which is then sent to the lab for testing.  The screening test you are given depends on your and medical history.   You may be screening using an HPV test, a Pap test, or both.  We will work with you to decide which test is right for you using clinical guidelines.
